THE HISTORY OF ROOF BROTHERS
|
The original Roof Brothers was a grocery store located at the corner of 7th & Tennessee streets in Paducah.
The store opened in the early 1900s and was owned by Louis Roof and his brothers.
The grocery also prominently featured a butcher shop.

In 1956, Louis’ son Paul opened his first liquor store one block away from the grocery, at the corner of 6th & Tennessee.
Paul received his first liquor license on his 21st birthday; he named the new store Paul Roof’s Drive In. As the name implied, the store was drive-up only, and many times the line to the window would extend down 6th Street.
The business grew and in 1967 he moved into a new, larger store in the middle of the block. This store was drive-in or walk-up only, and featured a service window on all 4 sides of the building. At first Paul was nervous about this location because of the lack of visibility. However, this store flourished for many years and became a fixture in the neighborhood.
|
In 1983, Paul purchased 19th Hole Liquors on Park Avenue.
The original building was used for several years until a new store could be built, larger and closer to the street.
In 1986, Roof Brothers Liquors opened the new building and the original 19th Hole was torn down. Kenny Roof, Paul’s son, managed this location.

In 1987, Roof Brothers opened a second location on Clark’s River Road.
Mike Roof, another of Paul’s sons, managed this location.

In the early nineties, Kenny realized that consumer’s tastes were beginning to change toward wines. He was quickly running out of room and needed much more floor space to devote to wines, specialty beers, and the new bourbons that were coming to market. Plans were drawn for a new building, and in 1999 the current store at 3145 Park Avenue opened.
Wendy, Paul’s oldest daughter, was brought on to manage the store’s new gifts & gourmet foods department.
In 2002, Mike expanded his south side store into a new location 2 doors down from the original. The new location more than tripled its original size, and today this store is the busiest liquor and beer retailer in the city.

With 8500 square feet, Western Kentucky’s only in-store wine cellar, and the largest selection of import and specialty beers within a 150-mile radius, the Park Avenue store is recognized as the go-to place for anything from a bottle of wine for dinner, to a custom-made gift basket for anyone on your gift list, to planning a wedding reception for 500 people.

 |
In 2003, Paul Roof’s Drive in on 6th Street closed, and Paul retired after more than 45 years in the business.
According to Kenny Roof, the business has come a long way in 50 years. “Dad’s original store was no bigger than an average-sized office,” he said. “His largest inventory was whiskey, scotch, bourbon and gin, and his customers were mostly hardworking men.”
|
In recent years, the Roof family has grown, with Terry, Todd, and Denny joining the business.
Besides the family, both Roof Brothers’ locations are staffed with expert personnel who can assist you with everything from selecting the perfect wine for that special occasion, to planning a keg party at the lake.
